2013 Filoil Flying V Hanes Preseason Premier Cup Jerseyvaluation: AdU Soaring Falcons

The Adamson University Soaring Falcons are competing in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Preseason Premier Cup in these uniforms:

The design is solid if unspectacular, but I'm not a fan of that seemingly glossy material—stadium or television lighting and flash photography give it an off-putting sheen.

The panels down the side of the shorts remind me of the DLSU Green Archers' shorts in UAAP Seasons 73 and 74.

PBA Set To Stage "Blue vs. Green Dream Game 2: The Revenge"

Oh hey, there will be another one of those Philippine Basketball Association-organized benefit games pitting ADMU Blue Eagles and DLSU Green Archers alumni:

[Image source: K. Yu on Instagram]

The "Blue vs. Green Dream Game 2: The Revenge" will be held at 2 p.m. on 2 June 2013 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. It's part of the events marking the pro league's 38th anniversary.

Based on the poster, here's the lineup for the Blue side: Chris Tiu, Wesley Gonzales, Rich Alvarez, Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Emman Monfort, JC Intal, Doug Kramer, Rico Villanueva, Paolo Bugia, Nonoy Baclao, Eric Salamat, and Magnum Membrere. Conspicuously absent (so far) are LA Tenorio and Larry Fonacier.

The roster for the Green side: Simon Atkins, Mike Cortez, Renren Ritualo, TY Tang, Willy Wilson, Don Allado, Joseph Yeo, JV Casio, Rico Maierhofer, Carlo Sharma, Mark Cardona, Ryan AraƱa, and Jerwin Gaco.

Ticketing information is available on the SM Tickets website.

These Ateneo-La Salle alumni games are starting to lose their novelty to me. It's the second time in two years that the PBA has staged one. Even if that means interest in the rivalry is still high, nostalgia events like this should not be an annual thing. A three- or four-year gap ought to be enough.

To be frank I'd rather watch the current Blue Eagles and Green Archers duke it out the day before in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Preseason Premier Cup.

[8 May 2013]

Here's the hype video for the event, consisting of clips from last year's game:

[10 May 2013 Edit]

It turns out past and present Blue Eagles will face their Green Archers counterparts on the same day.

The Ateneo-La Salle game in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Preseason Premier Cup originally scheduled on June 1 at the Arena in San Juan has been moved to June 2 at the SM MOA Arena. It will follow the Blue vs. Green Dream Game.

So who benefits more from this development, the Premier Cup organizers or the PBA? I'm leaning towards the latter.

I'm just wondering whether the same TV network will broadcast those two games. After all, PBA games air on AKTV on IBC-13 and/or TV5 while the Premier Cup is broadcast on Studio 23.

[12 May 2013 Edit]

At least one current Blue Eagle is excited about the first Ateneo-La Salle game this year:

[21 May 2013]

Solar Sports Desk is reporting that Blue Eagles alumni LA Tenorio and Larry Fonacier will miss the event to join the Gilas Pilipinas national team in training abroad.

[22 May 2013 Edit]

Uh-oh, the Ateneo-La Salle game in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Preseason Premier Cup has been moved back to June 1:

[Image from Filoil Flying V Sports on FB]

The fans who only bought tickets to the Dream Game in order to see the current Blue Eagles and Green Archers tangle won't be happy with this development. I wonder what happened among the PBA, Filoil Flying V Sports, and/or their respective broadcast partners. Somehow I don't buy that "Due to the availability of teams" line.

2013 Filoil Flying V Hanes Preseason Premier Cup Jerseyvaluation: FEU Tamaraws

In addition to Far Eastern University, Nike is also affiliated with two other UAAP member-schools. It's no wonder then that the FEU Tamaraws' uniform in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Preseason Premier Cup is cut from the same template as those of the ADMU Blue Eagles and the DLSU Green Archers.

Best Of Luck With This Retirement, 'Sheed

The New York Knicks announced last week that power forward/center Rasheed Wallace has retired for the second time. Though I don't usually blog about NBA-related developments, this one I have to mark here. After all, Portland Jail Blazers-era Wallace is one of my favorite basketball players of all time. I was such a big fan I once used his name in signing up for an e-mail account, which later led to a semi-amusing exchange.

2013 Filoil Flying V Hanes Preseason Premier Cup Jerseyvaluation: UST Growling Tigers

This is the uniform the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers are using in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Preseason Premier Cup:

[Photo credit: Jan Dizon for Inboundpass]

It's similar to the ones they used in the last UAAP season, but with fewer sponsor logos on the front (the back is another story) and a narrower stripe pattern on the sides (which doesn't match the stripes near the clavicle). For the school name they kept the design that I'm not a fan of (it looks like it was made using WordArt), but at least there's no tiger print.

FilOil 2013: UST Growling Tigers vs. UE Red Warriors, May 18

They also put a white tiger logo above the player number on the shorts. It looks cool, sure, but I guess they're not aware that while white tigers tend to be larger than the normal-colored ones, they are saddled with genetic defects. I like the Tongues-of-Fire-morphing-into-a-tiger logo they used last year and the year before more.

2013 Filoil Flying V Hanes Preseason Premier Cup Jerseyvaluation: DLSU Green Archers

Like the Ateneo Blue Eagles, in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Preseason Premier Cup the De La Salle University Green Archers are using uniforms we've already seen before in this same tournament.

Really, about the only difference I can see is that this time around the Green Archer logo is gone, replaced on the right side of the front of the shorts with the player number.

2013 Filoil Flying V Hanes Preseason Premier Cup Jerseyvaluation: ADMU Blue Eagles

Here's the uniform the Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles are using in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Preseason Premier Cup. It's from the same template the team used in this preseason tournament last year and the year before, with some modifications.

2013 Filoil Flying V Hanes Preseason Premier Cup: Updated ADMU Blue Eagles Lineup

Here's the Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles roster in the 7th Filoil Flying V Hanes Preseason Premier Cup:
23 Anton Asistio, G
18 Gboy Babilonia, PF
13 Ryan Buenafe, F
12 Gwyne Capacio, F
4 Nico Elorde, PG
7 JP Erram, C
22 Chris Gavia, G
21 Frank Golla, C
8 Isaac Lim, PG
10 Earl Murphy, G
11 Chris Newsome, F
19 Von Pessumal, G
17 Jerie Pingoy, PG
14 Kris Porter, PF
15 Kiefer Ravena, G
5 Juami Tiongson, PG
27 Vince Tolentino, F
Pingoy is on the list even though under newly-adopted UAAP residency rules, he is ineligible to play in Season 76 (and consequently, in the Premier Cup). But according to the Filoil tournament director, Jerie can suit up if he is cleared or released by FEU, Pingoy's former school. Ateneo head coach Bo Perasol is even hopeful that the two-time UAAP Juniors MVP will be allowed to play in time for the Blue Eagles' second or third game.

How Did You Say You Got Here Again?

Thanks to Blogger Stats and Site Meter I see some of the keywords people entered on web search engines that led them here. And because this blog now has around a thousand entries, sometimes search engines dig up semi-amusing combinations of words such as these:
Kiefer Ravena haircut, which led to this archive page

Ateneo school uniform, which led to this entry

Maja Salvador nose lift, which led to this archive page
Yup, people look for anything and everything on the Interweb. But to my credit (and relief), I've never written those exact phrases—before now, at least.

2013 Filoil Flying V Hanes Preseason Premier Cup: Updated Televised Elimination Round Games Schedule

[Image from the Filoil Fying V Sports FB Page]

Studio 23 will be broadcasting live only the 2 and 4 p.m. Saturday games of the 2013 Filoil Flying V Hanes Preseason Premier Cup. Below are the matches to be aired, which, incidentally, are all Seniors division games.
April 13
2 p.m. – SBC vs. NU
4 p.m. – UST vs. DLSU

April 20
2 p.m. – DLSU vs. SWU
4 p.m. – ADMU vs. UST

April 27
2 p.m. – UPHSD vs. FEU
4 p.m. – NU vs. JRU

May 4
2 p.m. – SWU vs. UST
4 p.m. – NU vs. UPHSD

May 11
2 p.m. – NU vs. AU
4 p.m. – FEU vs. UP

May 18
2 p.m. – UST vs. UE
4 p.m. – SBC vs. FEU

May 25
2 p.m. – UPHSD vs. SBC
4 p.m. – DLSU vs. UE

June 1
2 p.m. – AdU vs. SBC
4 p.m. – ADMU vs. DLSU
So that's four televised games each for NU and DLSU, the 2012 Premier Cup finalists who didn't make it out of the UAAP Final Four last season; SBC, fourth placer here last year and the reigning three-time NCAA champion; and UST, the losing UAAP finalist last season.

UPHSD, a Final Four team in the NCAA last year, and FEU, one of the bottom four teams in the UAAP last season, both have three televised games each.

Meanwhile, last year's Premier Cup third placer and the reigning five-time UAAP champion Ateneo only gets two. The Blue Eagles didn't even rate a televised game on Opening Day.

Were I the conspiracy theorist type I'd probably rail that that's a diss and/or an early indication of what the so-called experts think of the current Ateneo lineup, then quickly invoke Bill Simmons' "Nobody Believes In Us Theory." But there's a plausible explanation why, in this tournament at least, other teams will be on TV more: the Blue Eagles do not have a Filoil game in May when the team usually goes abroad for a training camp. Although Ateneo is one of the Premier Cup's top attractions, I assume it was hard for the tournament organizers to work around that month-long absence and give the Blue Eagles more TV time.
