Manny Pangilinan Dis-disengages From Ateneo

This is the interesting news (to say the least) I woke up to:
Together again: Pangilinan, Ateneo kiss, make up
By Jasmine W. Payo
Philippine Daily Inquirer

It looks like tycoon Manuel V. Pangilinan has patched things up with Ateneo de Manila University barely two months after their celebrated breakup.

Five unimpeachable sources, including those privy to the reconciliation talks, told the Inquirer on Saturday that Pangilinan, chair of the PLDT group of companies, has kissed and made up with his alma mater and will renew a relationship that has seen the Blue Eagles capture five straight basketball titles in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).

"It’s just like marriage. They were separated, but they didn’t divorce," one of the sources said. The sources asked that they not be named because they did not want to preempt the announcement of both camps.

The impending reconciliation has also prompted Ateneo to bring back Bo Perasol, the former pro coach endorsed by Pangilinan, to mentor the Blue Eagles in the next UAAP men’s basketball tournament.

Full story…
A month ago I wrote that I had an issue with how Manny Pangilinan timed and publicized his "disengagement" from Ateneo. I left it at that and didn't elaborate, as I had nothing good to say at the time.

This latest development, however, has only reinforced my pique that the Pangilinan camp leaked to the public his since-revoked decision. I just hate that this would now open the University to speculation, malicious or otherwise, about what it gave up or compromised in order for this reconciliation to happen. Pangilinan, too, won't emerge from this smelling like roses.

I've heard people describe this episode as soap operatic. And you know what? They're not too far off the mark. (No offense meant to those in the telenovela business.)

It's already a fait accompli.

UAAP Season 75: Ateneo Lady Spikers Lineup And First Round Schedule

We're weeks into the second semester of school year 2012-2013, which means soon I can again follow an ADMU sports team play on local TV. This time it's the Ateneo Lady Spikers, who will be competing in the UAAP Season 75 Women's volleyball tournament.

The Lady Spikersor the Lady Eagles as the media almost always (and perhaps mistakenly) refer to themmade it to the Finals for the first time ever last year, so they're one of the teams to watch this season. But if I recall correctly, this is the last playing year for the 2008 recruiting class that includes the Lady Spikers' top players in veterans Gretchen Ho, Fille Cainglet, Dzi Gervacio, Aillysse Nacachi, and Jem Ferrer. This means Season 75 could be the last best chance in the next few years for the team to bring Ateneo's first-ever women's volleyball title back to Loyola Heights.

Here is their first round schedule:
Saturday, 1 December 2012
San Juan Arena
3:30 PM - ADMU vs. FEU

Wednesday, 5 December 2012
San Juan Arena
2 PM - ADMU vs. UE

Sunday, 9 December 2012
San Juan Arena
3:30 PM - ADMU vs. UST

Saturday, 15 December 2012
San Juan Arena
3:30 PM - ADMU vs. NU

Wednesday, 19 December 2012
San Juan Arena
2 PM - ADMU vs. UP

Sunday, 6 January 2013
San Juan Arena
3:30 - ADMU vs. AdU

Saturday, 12 January 2013
San Juan Arena
3:30 PM - ADMU vs. DLSU

On another (and shallower) note, I look forward to seeing whether just like last year, the Lady Spikers will have uniforms that are similar to what the Blue Eagles used earlier in the UAAP season.
