The Past and the Spurious Fourth Anniversary

The Past and the Spurious is four years old today! This is now Post No. 643. As usual, here are the visitor stats from the past year.

[Graphic grabbed from Site Meter]

The numbers since I marked an anniversary last have been surprising. This past May, my small wish to get site visits in quadruple digits for twelve straight months finally came true. Also in the last year, TPaTS received double the number of site visits from its first three.

I know, I know, those aren't much to brag about, especially when compared to other blogs out there. But compared to TPaTS' first year when this blog received only 220 visits a month, that's a great improvement. It's a little satisfying (and a lot mortifying) to imagine that many eyeballs landing on this corner of the Interwebs and seeing the generally mundane stuff I've posted here as is my wont.

So in addition to those I mentioned last year and the years before that, I thank those who wasted spent a few seconds of their time browsing here. Oh, and the four more Followers I gained: Clifford Jeith; Money; Strange-Wonder; and Debbie Anne of Bride in a Pink Dress. See you next year!

Let's get this straight: I'm no Doc Funk. Still, it's fun to think of captions for these. Why not share yours in the comments?

Basti Artadi and Tirso Ripoll Spoof "Call Me Maybe"

Did anybody order shenanigans? Here you go then: singer Basti Artadi and guitarist Tirso Ripoll of rock bands Wolfgang and Razorback, respectively, with a spoof of “Call Me Maybe.”

(Those with delicate sensibilities may want to skip to the 1:45 mark. There are a lot of F-bombs at the start of the clip.)

Awesome. That’s some Parokya ni Edgar-grade shit right there. Who knew those two rockers had it in them?

And it looks like they're doing a video podcast. I must investigate this further.

It turns out Artadi and Ripoll have made some offbeat song choices in the past. They’ve previously covered Katy Perry's "Hot n Cold" and Rihanna's "Distubia."

[21 July 2012 Edit]

This is my best stab at the lyrics. I missed nearly an entire line, and I'm sure I got some words wrong.
Met one Saturday night
Things went from good to alright
I never once left her side
Felt like a king that day

Stuck my tongue in her mouth
It all came rushing out
Why the f**k didn't she shout
Or push me away

It started blowing
Cheese dip, vodka orange
Man, them gates were open
I had no way of going

I just met you, and this is crazy
But you made blow-by, all over me
I'm from Alabang, and we're in Q.C.
And you made blow-by, all over me

In awkward silence we fell
Look like a zombie from hell
There's no describing the smell
I had it on my face

Water came from her eyes
I thought she started to cry
She let a second one fly
And I was in its way

It started flowing
Chili chips or Coke and
Bacon, ham and sisig
Dami mong kinain

I just met you, and this is crazy
You made blow-by, all over me
I'm from Alabang, and we're in Q.C.
And you made blow-by, all over me

I just met you, and this is crazy
'Cause you made blow-by, all over me
I smell like shit, and I'm so stinky
'Cause you made blow-by, all over me

That's when you came into life
And I smell so bad, I feel so bad, I smell oh so bad
Bad that night would be thus far
I feel so bad, smell so bad, oh so bad

I'm from Alabang, and we're in Q.C.
And you made blow-by, all over me (Shit!)
I just met you, and this is crazy
'Cause you made blow-by, all over me

All over me (Shit!)

[15 August 2012 Update]

Thanks to an anonymous commenter, the lyrics are complete. Whether they're accurate is another matter altogether, heh.

Maybe Life Does Imitate Art

Friends brought this to my attention a few days back:

Being someone who thinks (and sometimes shouts), "Lumaban kayo! Revolt!" whenever I see livestock being transported, I find that news report simply awesome. Now I can imagine that a group of rebellious pigs finally had enough and pulled off a feat worthy of Animal Farm.

Orwell sure picked the right animal to lead a revolution, didn't he?

UAAP Season 75: Ateneo Courtside Reporter

It's official: Ateneo will have a new courtside reporter this year in Selina Dagdag. She couldn't have picked a better season—the Blue Eagles have a fair chance at winning their fifth straight title and she'll have one of the best seats in the house.

She seems comfortable enough in front of the camera:

For one reason or another ADMU's courtside reporter last year, Jaz Reyes, isn't back for a second tour of duty. That leaves Patty Laurel (2001-2002), Lia Cruz (2005-2006), and Jessica Mendoza (2009-2010) as the only ones so far to become Ateneo CSRs for back-to-back seasons.

Being the defending champs the Blue Eagles are favored to win it all. But this season nevertheless poses some interesting questions for the team:
  • How will Ateneo cope with the departure of Emman Monfort and Kirk Long, starters from last year's champion team who have used up their eligible playing years?
  • Can Norman Black again lead the squad to the title this year, his last as the Blue Eagles' head coach?
  • How will Ryan Buenafe, the Season 73 Finals MVP, fare in his return to action after missing the entirety of Season 74?
I guess we'll see.

Fr. Adolfo Dacanay Says To Call Him Maybe

There's going to be a Jesuit vocation seminar from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, 15 July 2012 (yep, the same day as the Ateneo Blue Eagles' first game in UAAP Season 75) at the Loyola House of Studies, Ateneo de Manila, Loyola Heights, Quezon City. It will be open to single male college students and young professionals.

Of the promo materials for that seminar currently circulating, I like the one featuring Fr. Adolfo Dacanay, SJ the best. What can I say, I have to rep my old college professor:

Fifty Thousand And First

Tonight's top story:
Late in the evening of 6 July 2012, Philippine time, The Past and the Spurious welcomed its 50,001st visitor.
And now, some words from our sponsors.

I'm especially proud of this latest milestone. After all, it was only a little over a year ago that TPatS received its 25,001st site visit.
