The Blue Eagles started things off with their second Fr. Martin Summer Cup win in three years:
Blue Eagles nip Bombers in OT, win Fr. Martin CupA couple of hours later, it was the Lady Spikers' turn to successfully defend their Shakey’s V-League first conference title:
MANILA, Philippines – The Ateneo Blue Eagles got big baskets from Nico Salva and Kiefer Ravena in overtime to beat the Jose Rizal University (JRU) Heavy Bombers, 98-92, and snare the 18th Fr. Martin Summer Cup last Sunday at the St. Placid Gym in San Beda.
It was the Blue Eagles’ second crown in the tournament since they last won it at the expense of the Mapua Cardinals two years ago.
Salva and Ravena had 16 and 12 points, respectively, and their baskets in the final minute of overtime kept the Bombers at bay after JRU threatened one last time, 90-all, off a jumper from Ron Carampil.
Lady Eagles Shakey’s V-League champs after toppling down Tigresses
By Celest R. Flores
MANILA, Philippines—Ateneo racked up two crucial points to put away University of Santo Tomas for good, 25-19, 25-14, 17-25, 20-25, 15-13, and nab another title Sunday in the 9th Shakey’s V-League first conference at the Arena in San Juan city.
Tied at 13-all in the fifth set, the Lady Eagles pounced on a costly error from the Tigresses, then Dzi Gervacio delivered the match-sealing point for their back-to-back championship.
Alyssa Valdez, whose presence for Ateneo has been invaluable even in the UAAP, was fittingly adjudged the Finals MVP as she churned out another commendable performance with 22 points—19 off kills and two off aces.
And here are the Lady Spikers clowning around to "Call Me Maybe".
Most of the footage was apparently shot right before Game 1 of the V-League finals, where they took the first set but lost in four. Make of that what you will.
I can watch that video over and over, if only because of scene-stealing head coach Roger Gorayeb. The Blue Eagles head coach, Norman Black, has nothing on him in terms of comic antics.
