Great Minds Think Alike: Tsk, Tsk

The source of their dismay? Ms. Philippines' answer in yesterday's Miss Universe 2010 Q & A portion:

The Associated Press was even less charitable: "The show was without any major gaffes, except for Miss Philippines' answer when asked what her biggest mistake in life was and how she fixed it."

Oh, well. As they say, kung hindi ukol, hindi bubukol.

UAAP Season 73 Eliminations: ADMU Game 8 Results

With their second victory against the Maroons in the past nine days, the Blue Eagles have stretched their win streak to four straight games.
Monfort powers Eagles past Maroons; Archers snare Bulldgos
Jasmine W. Payo
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines—Emman Monfort had been showing crack form in practice. On Saturday, the diminutive Ateneo guard flashed his deadly shooting for everyone to see.

Monfort unloaded 15 of his 23 points from beyond the arc as the Blue Eagles rolled past the University of the Philippines Maroons, 75-59, to grab a share of second in the 73rd UAAP men’s basketball tournament yesterday at the Araneta Coliseum.

This was the first Ateneo game this season that I missed entirely, although it wasn't because I was sure of a victory against the cellar-dwelling UP squad. I had an exam last Saturday so I had to miss what turned out to be Emman Monfort's career game.

The Lady Eagles also beat the UP Lady Maroons, 64-61. They're now fifth in the standings with 3 wins and 4 losses.

ALMA MATER Pride

My college batchmate Mike V must have 25 hours in his day.

In 2009, his ALMA MATER line of Ateneo de Manila-themed shirts debuted. It was a solid rookie effort, and included this looker:

ALMA MATER "Sesquicentennial" shirt

Recently, he announced that ALMA MATER's 2010 collection is now available. I looked at the preview pictures and damn, do the threads look fine. Case in point:

ALMA MATER "One Big Fight" shirt

Aren't they cool? They don't scream "Hey, look at me; I'm from the Ateneo," but a fellow Atenean will instantly know what's up. Really, they're the perfect gifts for your friendly neighborhood Atenista (ahem, ahem!).

I have no idea how much they cost, but apparently the ALMA MATER shirts are available at these locations: A Shop (at the ground floor of Xavier Hall in Ateneo's Loyola Heights, Quezon City campus; telephone number (632) 426-6001 local 4098); AHS Coop (at the Ateneo High School main cafeteria); and at UAAP basketball venues on game days. In the meantime, you can check them out on Multiply and on Facebook.

UAAP Season 73 Eliminations: ADMU Game 7 Results

My team has now won a season-best three straight games.
Ateneo stops UE 80-73; Adamson edges La Salle
By Jasmine W. Payo
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines -- Just when it seemed the game was about to slip away, Eric Salamat provided the offensive spark the Ateneo Blue Eagles needed in the final stretch.

Salamat knocked in key triples to lift the suddenly cold-shooting Eagles past the University of the East Warriors, 80-73, on Sunday, at the end of the first round of the 73rd UAAP men’s basketball eliminations at the Phil-Sports Arena.

Continued …
This was a great victory for the Blue Eagles. They trailed by six in the final quarter, but gutted it out. And while team captain Eric Salamat topscored, other Ateneo players also had their moments.

Hey Magic Tiongson—Pedro Cerrano called. Says there's a dance he wants to teach you.

It's kind of sad that the team Ateneo faced and beat in last year's Finals has had to debut new jerseys mid-season in order to jump-start their floundering campaign. And that the coach with the lustrous, advertising-ready hair has had to resort to technical foul-baiting theatrics to light a fire under his guys. How the (once) mighty have fallen.

The Lady Eagles lost in overtime to the DLSU Lady Archers, 64-60, and fell to 2-4.

UAAP Season 73 Eliminations: ADMU Game 6 Results

My team just bagged its second two-game win streak this season.
UAAP: Ateneo trounces UP; Adamson beats UE
By Mark C. Giongco, Celest Flores
INQUIRER.net

MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE 2) Ateneo rode on a strong performance to trounce University of the Philippines, 78-53, Thursday in the 73rd UAAP Men's Basketball Tournament at Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

Nico Salva finished with 18 points for the Eagles who are hoping to end the first round of eliminations on a winning note after finishing strong on their last two outings with a 4-2 record.

Continued …
In last year's first round UP pulled off a massive upset, beating Ateneo for the latter's sole loss in the Season 72 eliminations. What a difference a year makes.

This early the Blue Eagles already have two losses. They are no longer the juggernaut that ran roughshod over the competition in the past two seasons. But they must still remember last year's embarrassment at the hands of the Fighting Maroons, because even though they were already up by 24 entering the final period, the starters still saw action deep into the fourth. The result: a liberating 25-point beatdown, and first blood in this season's two-part "Battle of Katipunan."

Juami "Magic" Tiongson joined the rotating cast of Blue Eagles who have sparked the team to victory this year. In 13 minutes of action the second year guard tallied 13 points (8 out of 10 shooting, 3 of 3 from beyond the arc), 3 rebounds, and 2 assists. Tiongson sure did live up to his nickname: Ateneo was only up by one when he came off the bench, but aided by his solid play the rout was on.

When the Maroons beat the Blue Eagles last year they were wearing their "Fighting Blacks" jersey. I wonder why they didn't do so yesterday. Will UP debut that alternate uniform in the teams' second round encounter? Abangan.

UAAP Season 73 Eliminations: ADMU Game 5 Results

After that tough, tough loss to archrival La Salle, the universe owed Ateneo a law of averages win.
UAAP: Ateneo blasts NU; UE wins one vs UP
By Mark C. Giongco
INQUIRER.net

MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE 3) The Ateneo de Manila University used a furious third quarter rally to defeat National University, 82-65, Saturday in the 73rd UAAP men's basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

The Eagles, who are now lodged in a three-way tie with De La Salle University and the University of Sto. Tomas at 3-2, started out slow in the first half but broke out of the slump in the third quarter as they started connecting from the outside.

Continued …
It didn't look pretty early on—at one point in the second quarter the Bulldogs had twice as many points as the the Blue Eagles, 28-14. But with blue-collar play Ateneo trimmed the deficit to one at the half before putting the game away in the third. Rudy "Don't ever underestimate the heart of a champion!" Tomjanovich would've been proud.

Eric Salamat's excellent outing ought to silence—for now—those who have been calling for his head or worse, accusing him of shenanigans. I wish those so-called fans would drop it. Being the "King Eagle" can't be that easy.

In their last two games the Lady Eagles bowed to the Adamson Lady Falcons, 82-43, and the UST Tigresses, 72-66, and dropped to 2-3.
