They Strike Again

The JRU Heavy Bombers must lead the NCAA in hokey, poorly-designed team shirts.

Here is the 2009 edition.

They Got Next

Fifteen days from now the DLSU-hosted UAAP Season 73 will open. This year's theme is "Where Heroes Are Made," which explains this teaser:

How … literal. And the attributes picked don't even fit the teams' mascots that well. But I must say the costumes and the SFX look okay.

Oh, and the "Archer" is off-form. I hope that's a sign of things to come for their basketball squad in the coming tournament, heh.

Fug Me, Siblings Edition

Regular visitors of this blog will notice that I rarely write about, let alone post pictures of, my family. I'm making an exception this time, since the following photos are just too funny for words.

That's me with my brothers and sister at the house we lived in from the mid-'80s to the early '90s. My best guess is that it was taken during my late elementary school years.

(Yes, I once wasn't as dark-skinned as I am today. But I'd like to think I'm still photogenic, heh.)

Over the election break last month all four of us were home, so on a whim we decided to recreate our earlier photo. This was the best we came up with:

We still use the smaller chairs in the first picture, by the way, but of course we couldn't all fit in them now.

Unlikely Hero, Unlikely Champion

[Photo credit: Christian Petersen/Getty Images via Yahoo! Sports]

Before the 2009-2010 NBA season started, I hoped that Ron Artest doesn't eff up my favorite team.

Well, he did, sometimes (see: Game 5, 2010 NBA Finals). But mostly, he effed up the opposing team (see: Game 5, 2010 Western Conference semifinals; Game 7, 2010 NBA Finals). That is why, nine months later, here I am typing what was once—until yesterday—one of the most unlikely phrases of all time: "NBA champion Ron Artest."

Thank you, Ron-Ron. Filipino Laker fans all over the globe owe you a "how low halo."

Revanche

[Photo credit: Lisa Blumenfeld/Getty Images via Yahoo! Sports]

Two years ago today the Boston Celtics annihilated the Los Angeles Lakers to win the 2008 National Basketball Association title. It took a while, but LA has finally evened the score. The Twenty-Tens thus begin like The Aughts started and ended—with a Purple and Gold championship.

Thanks a lot, team, for that bit of constancy in my life.

Your turn to hold serve, Ateneo Blue Eagles.

UAAP 2010 Preseason Jerseyvaluation: AdU Soaring Falcons

Wearing this uniform the Adamson Falcons eliminated the Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles in the FilOil-Flying V Tanduay First Five Pre-Season Invitational Cup.

The Falcons exacted some measure revenge for what happened the day earlier, when the Blue Eagles knocked them out of the 16th Fr. Martin Summer Cup.

My Friends Win At Life!

ST over at From The 50 Peso Seats marked a milestone today: his 100th blog entry. W00t! Here's to at least a hundred more!

Now for a short history lesson with an accompanying track from Switchfoot, to boot.

(I just rhymed. Ha!)

(And no, I didn't just make a height crack. I didn't like the ring of "brief" so I erased it. I'll leave it at that so as not to over-share, or be too defensive.)

I forget when or how I learned that my college block- and thesis-mate blogged. I knew, though, that he had been published at least once before.

The first blog that I followed was a rather unimaginatively titled (oops, heh) yet always great to read food blog on Friendster (I know, how … quaint). After that came Ft50PS.

I'm proud to say I've read all those hundred entries (like I religiously read all the blogs on the sidebar). My unsolicited advice: if you have time to spare, do a food blog again, bro. You always know the whats, wheres, and hows of good eating.

(Make mine inihaw na liempo, dalawang kanin, itlog na pula, dalawang kamatis from Manang's; on a plate; and with my bare hands.)

On the other hand, K over at Tales of a [Pregnant] Good Life recently won a blog contest. Again, w00t!

(Just so you know, the previous paragraph used to start with "Meanwhile …" before I erased it, too. I just can't think/say/type that word without mentally adding "… at the Hall of Justice." Nod if you agree.)

(Or just leave a comment, since of course I can't see you nod, silly. Not that I couldn't imagine it—you nodding, I mean—because I totally could, blah blah blah blah blah ….)

UAAP 2010 Preseason Jerseyvaluation: FEU Tamaraws

The Far Eastern University Tamaraws are rocking this uni in the FilOil-Flying V Tanduay First Five Pre-Season Invitational Cup.

Viewed from the back:

Except for the color scheme and the typeface used, it's identical to that worn by the Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles, down to the team mascot on the front of the shorts. Not cool, Nike.

[12 June 2010 Edit]

The Ateneo and FEU uniforms are also identical to that of the NCAA's San Beda Red Lions. What is up with that?

My First Ateneo Is A Septuagenarian

Ateneo de Naga, my high school alma mater, turns seventy today. Now's as good a time as any to take a walk down memory lane.

30DoM, Day 27: My Empire Of Dirt

Or: A song that I wish I could play

I've said before that I'm not much on country music but boy, did the Johnny Cash version of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" blow me away. Who would've thought that the country music legend would cover an industrial rock outfit? And that "The Man in Black" would absolutely nail it to the point that the original composer, Trent Reznor, no longer feels the song is his?

Nobody, that's who.

30DoM, Day 26: Sa Pagsapit Ng Dilim

Or: A song that I can play on an instrument

Three or four years back I learned how to play Asin's "Himig ng Pag-ibig" with the help of a guitar instruction book. I used to be able to play that song from memory; now I already need a crib sheet of the chords.

I can also still play "Unchained Melody," but let's never speak of this again.

Project Exodus: February 2005

These posts from February 2005 have decided to make a human sacrifice to the golden calf. And they've chosen poor Lilia.
