UAAP Season 72 Finals: Three-peat!

This season wasn't pretty at times, but its end was oh-so-beautiful.

MANILA—A PERFECT ENDING to an imperfect start to the season.

Despite treading a less dominant path to the championship this year, Ateneo romped to a historic third straight crown after sweeping Far Eastern University, 65-62, in Game 2 of the 73rd UAAP men’s basketball Finals yesterday at the jampacked Araneta Coliseum.

Ryan Buenafe carried the Blue Eagles on his shoulders in the last seven minutes against an FEU squad that came out fighting this time, despite the absence of coach Glenn Capacio for the entire second half due to health reasons.

In 1989 Norman Black coached the San Miguel Beermen, my favorite Philippine Basketball Association team, to a grand slam. Twenty-one years later he did it again, this time with my favorite collegiate team. That man can never do wrong by me. In Black I trust.


The Blue Eagles again pulled the rug from under a newly-crowned Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year. In the 2009 Final Four they eliminated UST's Dylan Ababou and Jeric Teng; in the recently-concluded Finals they handcuffed FEU's RR Garcia and Terrence Romeo. There's a lesson there somewhere.
