MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE 2) Ateneo rode on a strong performance to trounce University of the Philippines, 78-53, Thursday in the 73rd UAAP Men's Basketball Tournament at Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
Nico Salva finished with 18 points for the Eagles who are hoping to end the first round of eliminations on a winning note after finishing strong on their last two outings with a 4-2 record.
This early the Blue Eagles already have two losses. They are no longer the juggernaut that ran roughshod over the competition in the past two seasons. But they must still remember last year's embarrassment at the hands of the Fighting Maroons, because even though they were already up by 24 entering the final period, the starters still saw action deep into the fourth. The result: a liberating 25-point beatdown, and first blood in this season's two-part "Battle of Katipunan."
Juami "Magic" Tiongson joined the rotating cast of Blue Eagles who have sparked the team to victory this year. In 13 minutes of action the second year guard tallied 13 points (8 out of 10 shooting, 3 of 3 from beyond the arc), 3 rebounds, and 2 assists. Tiongson sure did live up to his nickname: Ateneo was only up by one when he came off the bench, but aided by his solid play the rout was on.
When the Maroons beat the Blue Eagles last year they were wearing their "Fighting Blacks" jersey. I wonder why they didn't do so yesterday. Will UP debut that alternate uniform in the teams' second round encounter? Abangan.
