'Sensiya Na, Bata

Panalo Na Naman

Mga kapwa Pinoy, iboto natin 'to!
Did you know that the Philippines' coconut geotextile ( a.k.a.coconet) for soil erosion control has been chosen as one of the 12 finalists in Newsweek and BBC's (British Broadcasting Corporation) World's World Challenge?

The World Challenge is basically a competition/search designed at identifying groups or individuals all over the world whose projects have contributed great impact at grass roots level.

A documentary about Philippine Coconut geotextile or coconet industry will be shown on the BBC World cable channel on September 24 around 8:30 GMT and will also be featured in the August 29 special issue of Newsweek.

"The World Challenge" already offers a tremendous exposure and publicity to our flourishing Philippine coconut geotextile industry and to our Philippine coconut fiber exporters. But it would be great liberation for our country, which has been getting very bad publicity nowadays, to win this prestigious competition.

To vote, go here and click the picture of Philippine coconet.

Fair Warning: Evil Thought Ahead

I wish boils in the ass on the person who drew up the second round schedule of the UAAP men's senior basketball tournament. I'm happy Ateneo will play most of its games at the Loyola Gym, but Blue Eagle games in back-to-back playdates? And Ateneo and La Salle will play each other on a weekday? Those are failures of intelligence right there.

E.T. Might Read Me

I signed this blog up with Blog in Space, a site that promises to "transmit [this blog's feed] out on a powerful deep space transmission dish." How cool is that?

There's a guideline, however, to be followed:
Bloggers who use this site are urged to keep their blogs devoid of any language, comments or content that might offend, taunt or provoke alien life forms in any way. Let's not start an intergalactic war :)
Tsk tsk, some people have too much free time.

Heads Or Tails: The UPCAT

I pass through UP Diliman at least ten times a week on my way to and from work. Yesterday that was a wrong move. It was the UPCAT weekend so it took me forever to get rides. It then occurred to me: it's been ten years since I took the UPCAT.

I knew I would pass even before I took the test. I was sure of it the moment my crush got on the bus I rode to Naga the morning of the exam. The two of us also boarded the same jeep to the testing center, the University of Nueva Caceres.

During the test itself I finished each section ahead of time—even the Math part! I didn't review my answers. I spent the extra minutes stealing glances at my crush who sat in the same row a few seats away. I couldn't tell how she was faring with the test, only that she looked very pretty doing so.

When the results came out, I passed and she didn't. But I went to another university. First, UP Diliman put me in BS Computer Science instead of BA Journalism, which was my first choice. Second, my acceptance letter arrived a few days before graduation, when I had already decided to go to Ateneo de Manila.

Look at the other side of the coin here.

Playing Hooky

Atty. Punzi and I went to yesterday's iBlog Mini at the UP Law Center. It was a small event but it attracted much media attention. I saw three cameras from local TV networks.

Some big names in the local blogging scene attended. To name just the journalists, present were Philippine Daily Inquirer columnist Manolo Quezon, ABC 5 reporter Jove Francisco, and a contingent from the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism.

With all due respect to Mr. Quezon, what I took home is this: Pinoy blogging is here to stay, crisis or no crisis.

Atty. Punzi introduced me to his friend and fellow lawyer-slash-blogger, Marvin. The fellow is easy to like, especially after he took us out for lunch, he he.

Them two lawyers have big plans. Even better, they might have some use for me.

Except for the covered walkway that's being constructed, the UP College of Law is as I remembered it. And it's always nice to catch up on things with a few familiar faces.

I have to watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory again—I fell asleep after the river ride and woke in the squirrel room. But it wasn't the movie's fault; the seats in the newly-renovated SM North cinemas are too conducive to napping.

Raul Roco has passed away.

If there was ever anyone qualified to have been President, it was Roco. And I'm not saying this just because he's a fellow Bicolano and Ateneo de Naga alumnus.

Pakshet!

Someone thought this blog belongs to some band so I Googled "Punk Sinatra." Imagine my dismay when I found not one but two bands with that name; one is a local group while the other is Portuguese. And I haven't heard of either of them before!

Great. What a way to celebrate my blog's second anniversary this Saturday.

I have no choice but to rename this blog, though I do so reluctantly. I happen to like "Punk Sinatra"; I've liked it since I thought I heard a friend unknowingly mispronounce "Frank Sinatra." It makes me smile, just like the band name "Blast Ople."

Sigh.

I'm fresh out of ideas so I might as well hold a little rename-this-blog contest. You, my friends, have until August 19 to submit entries, after which I'll pick out the one I like most.

The winner will be treated to all the Dannylicious barbecue he or she can eat. If I'm in a good mood (and if the winner is a known drinker), I just might throw in more than a few beers.

So. A little help, folks?

The Blue Eagles have to stop winning this way. Half an hour ago they led UE by 16 at the start of the fourth quarter but only won by two.

A win is a win, however. Ateneo now has a three-game winning streak! With Adamson as their next opponent this Sunday there's a good chance they'll make it four in a row.
