Cell phones for everyone my immediate family! Do you give any away? If yes, to whom? Ten percent to Charity. She works at... Do you invest any? If so, how? Whatever's left after balato I'll use to put up an ad agency with my friends.

A Veritable Bomb

The government company I work for celebrated its 27th anniversary today. There was a little ceremony, and it fell to the President and CEO to deliver a parting message. He obliged—literally. Near the end of the speech he announced his surprise resignation effective at the end of the month. Which is tomorrow. He said he wanted to prioritize his family. When I looked around, tulala lahat ng tao. And right after the speech, the song that goes, "Happy/It's so nice to be happy/Sha-la-la-la" played. Nice.

This Stumped Me Today

Here's Ray Allen of the NBA team Seattle Supersonics, on the the significance of his triple-double (22 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists) in a 96-82 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers earlier today:
"We didn't win. It would have been great to celebrate if we had won the game," he said. "It's like a ship passing in the night. You just see it and it goes."
Wow, unexpected poetry. Which is the best kind.

Awww

A friend wrote me this awesome Friendster testimonial:
[Tibibord] and I used to trade rock cassette tapes during college. That, and black nail polish. From time to time nowadays, however we trade legal diagnoses to get me out of some serious legal shet. Thanks for the sanity check, [Tibibord]. Cheers to you! "His brilliance is effortless, his sincerity permeates."
Thanks, Deb.

Must-see

50 First Dates is a story about a vet (Adam Sandler) who falls for a woman (Drew Barrymore) suffering from short-term memory loss. Because of her condition, theirs is a love that's always new—literally—as he has to make her fall in love with him day after day.

Nicholas Sparks' The Notebook has a similar twist, I think. But unlike the book, this movie's a comedy. I have high expectations. Who wouldn't, The Wedding Singer set such a high standard.

Underground Party

Last night was Mark and Syd's combined birthday party (I initially typed "joint party," but that would've been a misnomer). Neither guy was born January 17. Mark, the third guy from the left, was born January 22. Syd, the third from the right, was born January 12. I bet they compromised and picked a date somewhere in the middle. The two of them booked a room at the Linden Suites in Ortigas Avenue. We smuggled in food and drinks. About twenty people showed up. Getting them to the room was a production in itself. You see, hotel parties are banned in Linden. When asked, guests had to say they were going to Monsoon, which was a bar located in one of the lower floors. Wala namang nakatunog. The party broke up around 3 a.m. The birthday boys and I stayed in until noon. Later on we learned that the adjoining rooms were unoccupied. That was fortunate: we made a lot of noise. Had someone reported the ruckus, who knows what would've happened? We could've been kicked out, or made to pay a bigger room fee. It was such a fun party. Will they top it next year?

Conspicuous

An EVP at work has a watchful eye. One time he gave me career counseling. Next he gave me fashion advice. Last week he was at it again:
EVP: Ganda n'yan, a.
Me: Sir?
EVP: (Points to my thumb ring) French lang nakikita ko na nagsusuot ng ganyan.
Me: May lahi po siguro akong French, sir.
EVP: French fries? Ha ha ha!

B'wiset.

Freak Occurrence

For the first time since October, I was late for work yesterday. Traffic sa MRT, grabe. Something must have happened along the southbound line. Normally the trains make 30-second stops at each station, but yesterday we made 3-minute stops. I could see the train behind ours idling(?), waiting for its turn to load and unload at stations. Our driver kept apologizing over the intercom. Tardiness isn't usually a big issue for me, but to be late the day after your boss issues a memo extending your current contract...

A Waste

According to a news bulletin last night, Gayuma—a homey little eating place along Abada Street near Ateneo—burned down yesterday. I haven't verified it, though. The Inq7 website didn't carry that news item today, and I'm too lazy to go to Abada and see for myself. It'd be sad if the news were true. I ate there a few times last year. They had affordable beer, good food, a nice ambiance... And did I mention they had affordable beer?

Addendum

I've decided to add to my New Year's pwamises. I will cut back on my drinking. Because I don't like the person I become when under the influence. I do stupid things; I say stuff I wouldn't have said while sober. I get into accidents. But that additional pwamis will have to wait—at least until after Mark and Syd's joint party this Saturday night, hehe. Sigh. It feels good to have something to look forward to on a uneventful day. Especially when the last few months have been a personal hell.

Not An Itchyworm

My neck itched after I left the house this morning. I thought it was an allergy but then I remembered what I ate last: Purefoods canned sisig and rice. Nah,I can't be allergic to that. It was only when I reached the office that I discovered I wore my undershirt wrong. Nasa harap 'yung etiketa!

I Am Bach

Last night someone stoned the bus I was riding. The stone broke through the glass window and hit a little girl. Fortunately there was a curtain that absorbed most of the impact. To her credit, the girl didn't cry. Maybe she was in shock.

It took a while before the bus driver realized what had happened. By then we had traveled at least half a kilometer; there was no chance of apprehending the culprit.

Some passengers had to shake glass shards out of their hair, their clothes, and their luggage. All those who were asleep woke up.

Good thing there was some packaging tape on board. They put a crude, McGyver-type bandage on the hole using a piece of cardboard.

I was in college the last time something similar happened. The conductor didn't cover the hole so for the rest of the trip, every time we hit a bump or a pothole the glass cracked some more until it shattered.

Pwamises

This will be my 25th year on this rock. I get this nagging feeling I should start acting my age. And soon. So this year I'll attempt the following: 1. Gain weight. Or lop off a few inches to hit my ideal height-weight ratio. 2. Be organized. I'll start with making my bed every morning. 3. Get a career. I've given my friends enough head start. 4. Play more. It'll do my body a lot of good. 5. Avoid fashion don'ts. Like wearing my heart on my sleeve.
